Our speaker will be Judy Wilson:
“Some notable Cambridge shops”
Matthew’s, Heffers, Robert Sayle’s, Eaden Lilley’s ….. just some of the family firms supplying Cambridge residents and the university in the 19th and 20th centuries with food and drink, books, clothes and household items. A Matthew myself, I became intrigued about what my father’s firm might have had in common with other shops. What links did these shops have with the University? How did family succession work – or what were its challenges? What contributions did their Managing Directors and others make to the local community? Drawing on written accounts, I will introduce some of the men (and the few women) who led these well remembered businesses, and compare their shops.
